Welcome to the Prince William Lacrosse League K2 NVYLL team. My name is Katie Graves and I am the head coach for the NVYLL G2K team. I am excited to coach the girls and get to know you all.
I started playing lacrosse in 6thGrade, so I know it is a challenging sport to learn, but such a fun game. Please keep encouraging your girls to persevere thru learning the fundamentals. It really does take time and individual practice to learn and apply lacrosse skills.
My best advice is to practice fundamentals at home, try new skills, apply concepts from other sports, and find creative ways to contribute to the team (speed, defense, be first to ground balls, create space for plays, and encourage/build up teammates).
I am also excited that Maureen Clifford will be assisting with coaching. She also brings collegiate lacrosse experience to our team!
1) Have fun, encourage each other, & have a positive experience
2) Learn Basic Fundamentals of lacrosse (cradle, catch, throw)
3) Apply basic team sports concepts (get open to receive pass, change speeds, creating space, effective communication, and field awareness
GAMES: NVYLL (Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League) has teams from Prince William, Louden, and Fairfax Counties. It will be a 7v7 format with or without goalies. Score is not kept at this level as the focus is on player development. See the Prince William Royals website for the full schedule with the times and locations. Home games will be at Saunders Middle School and all games will occur on Sundays (Except for April 13, which is a SAT @0900). Our first game is March 24 and last game is May 19.
Please arrive 45min before the game, so we have enough time to warm up. I encourage you to get there earlier to stretch and warm up with a ball, but as a team, we will officially warm up 30 minutes prior to game time.
I realize our games are on Sundays, which can conflict with worship and family time. Please just let me know if you will be late, so I can adjust the sub rotations.
PRACTICES:We will practice twice a week with games on Sundays (except SAT, APR 13). Location is subject to change based on the many field requests across the county. I will update you as soon as I hear of any changes. Please check your email before every practice in case there is a last minute change.
If you have trouble checking email, please give me a number and I can text you.
I want to keep the girls engaged and learning game situations, so we will focus on game scenarios during practice. I will try to keep school night practices to one hour, but will also be available (schedule permitting) to do some optional stick work before practice officially begins.
Stick: if you are not sure about stick length please ask me.
Googles: Full Cage. Please have your girls try on at home and adjust straps. Having a ponytail or bun between the straps, helps it stay in place.
Colored Mouth Guard: I recommend having more than one in case it falls out or gets lost. No vampire mouth guards --these are not permitted during games.
Water Bottle: Please bring every practice and game.
Footwear: Cleats are not a requirement but may be helpful on slippery surfaces.
Pinnie: Provided by the league and needed for practices.
Uniform: Purchased through the league.
Under Uniform: We would like the girls wear black or Navy Blue under their uniform on game days when it is cold (Leggings and Shirt) and black/navy Blue bike shorts under their skirt when it is warm.
TEAM “MOM” : Thank you for those who reached out to assist with Admin responsibilities. We will have a team Mom coordinating snack rotation, optional gear purchases, end of the year party, etc. More information to follow-I will be sending the team Mom your emails in the next couple of days- please let me know if you have a different email that you want used for Admin correspondence with our Team Mom.
